Embracing Career Change

marianovak_IKEAFor most of us, losing our job is a terrifying prospect. For Maria Novak, it became a great opportunity.

Maria spent her career in marketing positions across a variety of industries, including over ten years in her most recent position. When the company relocated, she considered her options and where she could go next. After some deliberation, and time as an independent consultant, Maria decided to train in digital marketing.

Maria pursued her training online with a Digital Brand Management Certificate from Oregon State University’s Professional and Continuing Education (PACE). Since she was still working as an independent consultant at the time, PACE’s program was perfect for her busy schedule. Plus, even though she was across the country from Oregon State’s campus in Corvallis, Maria built a community in these courses and became close with her classmates.

“It didn’t feel like I was by myself in Philadelphia. I was really part of a group, and I got to know people and understand their businesses,” said Maria. “I was learning from my classmates, as well as my instructor.”

When Maria reentered the job market, these lessons became immediately valuable. Now she works as an Employer Branding and Channel Specialist at IKEA Group and credits her time at Oregon State with helping her secure this position.

“When I was in the interview, everything just flowed out perfectly, and I absolutely credit the course with that,” said Maria. “I never would have gotten it without this course.”

Losing your job is terrifying, and it brings great uncertainty for what comes next. Maria turned that uncertainty into opportunity by focusing on her strengths and amplifying her skills. By establishing clear goals in a time of stress and pursuing the training she needed, Maria moved forward into exciting new areas.

“It’s the best thing I ever did to enroll in this course,” said Maria. “It really catapulted my career on so many different levels.”
